Falls Creek signs letter regarding stimulus money
03/05/2009
FALLS CREEK - Falls Creek Borough Council agreed Monday to sign a letter from the Northwest Coalition of Mayors to Sen. Bob Casey Jr. regarding the distribution of the stimulus money.
The letter was forwarded to the borough by Mayor David Wonderling of Brookville.
"As you know, all our residents are facing the same common adversary, it is an economic downturn unlike any other since the Great Depression. Our residents are losing their jobs, our industries and businesses are struggling and our ability to respond to their needs is becoming increasingly diminished by decreasing tax revenues and support from county and state governments. We desperately need to receive 'economic stimulus' money from the federal government," the letter said.
"Moreover, one of our major concerns is that the economic stimulus money, which Congress intends to benefit our people, is not going to reach them because of misguided restrictions, bureaucratic red tape, partisan politics or special interests diverting is elsewhere. We urge you exert your influence, whether it be in the Conference Committee or on the floor of the Senate, to ensure the effective, efficient, and transparent flow of dollars from the federal government to the front lines of this problem, our local communities," the letter continued.
It recommended the government recognize the best means of stimulating the economy in each of the communities varies and can range from repairing infrastructure, upgrading sewer and water plants, green energy projects, or supporting local arts projects as a catalyst to the local economy.
The letter also asked for speed and efficiency in the arrival of the money to municipalities. In the short term, by using the existing Community Development Block Grant program to disperse the funds. In the long term, it was suggested the government mimic the revenue sharing programs of the 1970's, which appropriated money directly from the federal government to local governments, eliminating time and administrative expenses.
Also discussed:
* Code Enforcement officer Jacqueline Dixon resigned after a month of service. The nominating committee is currently working to fill the position.
* The CO-STARS contract will be received in August for the salt, meaning the borough is already on the way to being prepared for the 2009-10 winter season.
