I remember the Falls Creek Fire Police handling the parking chores at Hummingbird. Back in it's first go 'round. They were quite dapper in their attire. Black pants, white shirts, usually short sleeve with the sleeves rolled up, thin black ties about 2" wide, which was the style at the time, and police hats like this one. Not sure, but I think the hats were white with black brims.. Maybe somebody has a group picture of the Fire Police from those days. The Fire Police were very active in those days, 60's - '70's.

My ex brother in law used to race at the hbird in the late model class #28 White 427 Ford. My favorite guy though was Flip Ball who drove first a yellow #7 car and then a blue #777. He was the man to beat. Lots of people hated him, but I thought he was one of the best. Ahh the dusty hbird speedway. I always would have to clean my Amaka jacket when I came home from the races..........Anyone remember the Amakas and the Reprobates? They used to have all kind of clubs @ DAHS. Girls clubs NOS, KID, QOZ, DOL, and of course the DeMolay club for the boys. Whew, I am not sure if they still exsist or not. Doubt it All things must Pass.

Flip Ball, the backseat driver. He extended the steering column and had his seat mounted in the rear of his car.

I remember the old steering wheel extension, I always thought 777 was blue with white numbers. Thanks for the pics. He was my favorite guy.

Wild Bill Kiel was the flagman when he wasn't driving school bus. Anyone remember getting picked up @ Hick's garage for school? Used to blow my allowance on candy and gumball machines there. Also does anyone remember the "White Angel" skating bus that would pick us up @ Hick's garage on friday nites about 6 and drop us off at about 10:30? I think Don McKowan drove it and owned the edgwood skating ring by the drive in. Any body say yep yep to that?

Yep, Yep to all of the above. I still see Flip around town when he isn't hiding from the winter down in Florida. I believe he winters in Sebring.

All right Wildcat2 and Hipower. I just know there are some dusty old tales of tom foolery in you guy's bags. Lets cough im up. What a great deal. My allowance was a buck a week. I would go skating which I think cost 75cents to get in. Since I had my own skates that was a non issue, You could play the BINGO they had on the big letters on the wall and possibly win $$$ or you could race in the wash buckets or straight up and possibly get a free pass for next week. What a deal. Round trip to the skating rink, possibly come back with some cash and some lipstick on you soup coolers for less than a buck. Denny Burkett always pushed me in the wash bucket and we won frequently. That dude could skate..........

Here's a couple Paul Betton pictures...... I think I see a clue as to why you were a fan, phoenixsmom, on this car.... And here brucie is a picture of the #28 Ford, but Dick must have been camera shy. And everybody's favorite flag man, when he wasn't racing, Wild Bill Kiel. He just might have liked flagging as much as he liked driving... ;D

I remember one nite when Wild Bill came down out of his flag stand and was waving a yellow because of a big wreck and a tire came off of a car and was bouncing right at him. He climbed that fence like a monkey getting away from that tire. I never seen a man move that fast except for Jim when thunder thighs would page him....

Went to many a race when I was married to Dick. All the Betton boys are gone now. Hard to believe!
