I was in the building when it caught fire. At the time the Falls Creek Lions club was meeting in the front room of the Odd Fellows upstairs. It may take me some time to remeber the names of the members that were there. Anyway, there was a pizza joint downstairs. I believe it occupied the old Brakey's Confectionary. ( I may have mis-spelled that ). Their pizza was the best. While we were meeting you could smell the pizza in the oven and when the fire began we weren't sure what was happening but assumed it was burnt pizza and were reluctant to leave. Sirens were sounding as we were leaving the building. I don't remember which firemen were there first but we were sure it was going to be extinguished quickly. It was just a burnt pizza anyway. Obviously we were very wrong and very lucky the fire hadn't spread quicker.

I was there too...shortly after it started. My partner and I were packed up, hose in hand, and made it to the top of the stairs beside the pizza shop. Lots of heat and thick black smoke, interior ceiling was crackling and falling...just didn't "feel" right. I relayed to my partner that we were retreating...just made it to the bottom of the stairs when it flashed over...flames the whole way down the stairs and out the front door! If we would have stayed there a minute longer...well, I wouldn't be typing this today. It was the closest call I've ever had...yah, I remember it!

Alton, Glad to hear from you. No big deal on the broken nose ... If that was the worst injury I would have received over the years, I would have been happy! Are you still "hanging it out there" when the whistle blows? I gave it up about 6 years ago, just too old and beat up.
