Boy, I spent a whole lot of hours sitting on that big rock at the Paddycar. Even later in the summer, when most of the stocked trout were gone, you could always catch a bunch of chubs there....

longbeard, did you ever fish at the fathoms? Someone told me there were some really big bass in there. I remember catching a mudpuppy at the paddy car, we did not know what it was, we carried it on the pole up to the Pine Inn so Uncle Bill could take it off the line for us. Man that was a long time ago.

That rock at the paddycar, now thats a picture that no matter how old or were your at , you know what and where it is. Also its been a few years since I've fished at the big fathoms, But I caught a couple of small bass and saw a couple of the biggest bass I've ever seen there.

Back in the day, we used to walk along the top of that high wall at the Big Fathoms and see some really big bass down in the water. I remember fishing at both ends, several times, with limited success. So one fine summer day, 1976 I believe, my old buddy grady and I decided to put a boat down in that hole and go after the big 'uns. I had a nice boat, but it was a little heavy, a wide beamed 12 ft. V-bottom. So the adventure began. We darned near killed ourselves getting that boat down over that drop off. Then we had to make a couple more trips with fishing gear, the trolling motor, battery, a cooler, no not for beer, it was to keep all the fish cold. We probably carted a half a ton of crap down that steep path. But we were certain that all those trophy bass we were going to catch would make it all worth while. Ha! We fished the entire length, down and back. I don't remember for sure, but I don't think we caught a single fish. I do remember for certain that we definitely didn't catch anything that even came close to "trophy" status. And of course by the time we were done, it was hot....sunny and hot. The project of getting all that crap back out of that back up out of that pit was not tackled as enthusiastically as hauling it down, I can assure you of that... But that was the last time I ever drug a boat down over that drop off. As with all our zany adventures, we lived to tell about and learned not to do it again. I swear, there were big bass in there, but I sure never caught any of them. After they strip mined on the opposite side of the road, it cut off a lot of the flow of fresh water into the Fathoms. The water always looked pretty funky in mid summer after that. I don't know if the bass survived that drop in water quality, or not.

I'll ask the guy who told me about the big bass in there. The way he talked someone was going to fill it in and he wanted to go try to catch some of the big ones before that happened. This was just last year.
