Brucie brought up the Hardware Store and I remember at one time all the girls in town had the same pants, bought at the Hardware Store! They were a kind of zig zag print in red and black or green and yellow. I know I saw many girls wearing those pants! Lila Mae was always saving clothes for me there and when I went in she had a whole rack of stuff she thought I would like! I bought tons of stuff there. She always watched you like a hawk, but I think she liked the kids in town.

There will NEVER be another Phillips Hardware, and I doubt there are many places like it left anywhere. I can remember calling Jim at home many evenings, or Sundays, when I needed a $5.00 gadget to get one of my aged appliances up and running. Never an extra charge for that service and he'd just put it on my account until next payday.
I can remember calling there from work one morning telling them that my hot-water tank had died, told them the basement door was unlocked. When I stopped home at lunch time there was a new tank installed and the old one was gone. The bill had no labor charge on it, just the hot-water tank. You may have paid full retail but it was the best deal you could ever hope for when you took the service into account.
Short on money and wanted to go rabbit hunting after school? No problem, they would sell you single shotgun shells, no need to buy a whole box.
I painted the inside of that store after the Schaffner's fire and I'll tell you that they did have "Most Everything. I helped move it all off the shelves and put it all back. How about that Shovel rack, they wheeled it out front every morning and back in every night.
Jim, Ray and Lila Mae, along with a host of other employees over the years, were a big part of Falls Creek culture, they helped shape the town many of us grew up in. I miss them and the store.

We moved to Falls Creek in the early 60's, my dad bought a house across from the old pottery and it needed a roof. He just started his new job at Ward Trucking and didn't have enough money for shingles to roof the house. Jim and Ray saw to it that he not only got the shingles, but also had a bunch of guys come down and shingle the house for us in one day. He told dad to pay him when he got a couple of paychecks under his belt. Many a deals were made with a handshake then. Another place was the Falls Creek service center. You could call Pete Parks up and he would come get your car, service it, Larry Collins would wash it and would return it without any service charge for the pick up and delivery. I would roll in to Pete's and tell Pete to fill it up and put it on my tab and drive away. Everyone got paid once a week on Friday's then, and I am sure he probably got ripped off a time or two, but that was a cool service for teenagers at the time.
